After days of Republican drama, the House on Thursday passed President Donald Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill.

Trump helped Speaker Mike Johnson pressure GOP holdouts into flipping their no votes to allow the measure to go forward in time to meet the president's self-imposed July Fourth deadline.

Fitzpatrick, who represents Pennsylvania, cited the Senate changes to the House bill as the reason he voted against the legislation.

"The original House language was written in a way that protected our community; the Senate amendments fell short of our standard. I believe in, and will always fight for, policies that are thoughtful, compassionate, and good for our community. It is this standard that will always guide my legislative decisions," he said in a statement.

The final vote came after an overnight scramble by Speaker Mike Johnson to secure the necessary GOP votes to proceed, and then a record-breaking speech from House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries that lasted for 8 hours and 44 minutes.

No changes were made by the House to the Senate version of the bill, despite some grumbling from House Republican hardliners over the Senate changes to Medicaid and the deficit. Some of those holdouts say Trump made promises to get their votes, including saying he'd make the bill "better" in the future.

Johnson derides Jeffries' speech as 'performance,' says GOP delivers 'results'

"It makes no difference whether our colleagues only across the chamber speak for 25 minutes or 25 hours," House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Thursday. "They can't change the truth. And today, today was about performance for some of them but today for us is about results. It's results that improve the lives of Americans, regardless of their race, religion, color or creed. It does not matter.

"I tell you what Ronald Reagan used to remind us: you can always trust the American people, and we do trust the American people, and they can discern the difference," he continued. "What they saw on display here today is that Democrats deliver performances and Republicans deliver results."
