The White House said on Sunday that it reached a trade deal with China as the two countries negotiated for a second day in Switzerland. China has yet to comment on Sunday's talks.

"We’re confident that the deal we struck with our Chinese partners will help us to work toward resolving that national emergency,” U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters in Geneva. But Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said "substantial progress" had been made but stopped short of touting a full deal.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the United Kingdom -- the first in what the White House said it hopes will be a flurry of agreements while the reciprocal tariff pause is in effect. With UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on speaker phone in the Oval Office, the leaders conceded that they are still working out the details of the agreement.

Treasury secretary to meet with Chinese official on tariffs

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will travel to Switzerland on Thursday where he will meet with a top Chinese official for economic matters -- as the Chinese government says it has decided to "engage with the U.S."

Bessent's meeting comes as the trade war between the U.S. and China continues.

The meeting also follows China's government pushing back against President Donald Trump's previous comments that the two countries were actively discussing trade.

Bessent will also meet with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter to discuss trade and said in a statement, "I look forward to productive talks as we work towards rebalancing the international economic system towards better serving the interests of the United States.”

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will also travel to Switzerland to meet with his Chinese counterpart.

In a statement, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said Bessent would be meeting with Vice Premier He Lifeng.

"China has decided to agree to engage with the US,"

"China's position is consistent," a statement from the Chinese Commerce Ministry said. "Whether it is fighting or negotiating, China's determination to safeguard its own development interests will not change, and its position and goal of defending international fairness and justice and maintaining the international economic and trade order will not change. If we fight, we will fight to the end; if we negotiate, the door is open."

At a "FIFA Task Force Meeting" in the White House's East Room Tuesday, Trump said he had a "great" meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and said that the United States' relationship with Canada and Mexico were good ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The US, Canada and Mexico are co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. When asked about tensions and problems with a joint partnership, the president brushed aside any potential disagreements despite his ongoing tariffs with the two countries.

"No, I don't see any tension in that. We get along very well with both. It just got to pay a little more money, you know. They're just getting away with things that they shouldn't be, and they understand," Trump said.
