Suspect arrested in shooting of 2 Portland officers following weeklong manhunt: Police
The suspect was booked on attempted murder charges.
A suspect accused of shooting and injuring two Portland, Oregon, police officers has been arrested following a weeklong manhunt and booked for attempted murder, authorities said.
The shooting occurred on Jan. 19 after the officers responded to a call of an armed man making threats in the city's Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood, according to a statement from Portland police.
The suspected gunman allegedly fled the scene on foot, with police releasing surveillance images of the individual.
The suspect -- identified as 41-year-old Eric F. Oelkers, of Portland -- was arrested early Monday during a "tactical operation," police said.
Oelkers has since been booked on two counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree attempted assault and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, police said.
"In addition, a firearm was seized during a search of the area where Oelkers was taken into custody," the Portland Police Bureau said in a press release Monday.
The two officers were taken to a hospital and have since been released.
"This is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job, the jobs that our officers go out every day to serve and protect our community and we're grateful for," Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said during a press conference last week.
"We're very concerned for the officers that were shot, we're happy to hear that they are in stable condition and we wish them a speedy recovery and we send them our prayers," Wilson said.
