Sizzling US temperatures put more than 100 million people under heat alerts
At least seven large cities are forecast to reach triple-digit highs.
More than 100 million people across the nation are under some form of heat alert on Sunday, with dangerously hot weather expected to affect a large portion of the country from the West to the Midwest.
At least seven large cities forecast to reach triple-digit highs, including 112 degrees in Las Vegas, 109 in Phoenix and 105 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Other cities expected to top 100 degrees include Omaha, Denver, Dallas and Kansas City, while Minneapolis and St. Louis are forecast to reach the upper 90s.
Extreme heat warnings are in effect for Phoenix, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Omaha, Nebraska.
Afternoon temperatures on Sunday are forecast to reach the 100-degree mark from the desert Southwest to parts of the Rockies, the Plains and the Dakotas.
Denver’s forecast high of 102 degrees would break its July 26 record of 100 degrees, set in 1910. Rapid City’s forecast high of 105 would challenge its daily record of 103, set in 1987. Rapid City already reached a record 112 degrees Saturday.
From Texas to the Upper Midwest, the heat will be compounded by high humidity. Heat index values of 105 to 115 degrees are expected across a broad area, with a few locations potentially feeling even hotter.
The overnight hours will provide limited relief. Sunday-night temperatures are only expected to fall to around 90 degrees in Phoenix and Las Vegas, while lows near 80 are forecast in cities such as Dallas, Kansas City and Omaha.
A cold front should begin bringing some cooler weather to the Upper Midwest early this week. However, dangerous heat will persist across much of the central and southern United States through at least Monday and continue in portions of the South beyond that.
Severe thunderstorms expected in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes
The northern edge of Sunday's heat dome will help fuel another round of severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon and into the night.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the Midwest and Great Lakes under a 2 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms on Sunday, including parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
Damaging wind gusts are possible from the storms, as well as large hail and an isolated tornado. Across Nebraska and southeastern South Dakota, isolated thunderstorm wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph are possible.
The severe weather threat shifts toward the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley on Monday. Damaging winds and large hail will remain the primary hazards, although an isolated tornado will also be possible.
