Blond Bandit on Robbery Spree
N E W Y O R K, May 23 -- — A blond woman whose getaway car is a "soccer mom" SUV has been on a bank robbery spree, hitting as many as six banks in the affluent suburbs around New York City since Wednesday.
Investigators say the woman approaches the counter and threatens the teller. She says she has a weapon, but in only one case has she showed a handgun. She gets the cash, then she jumps in a waiting SUV and drives away.
"It's almost like a Bonnie Parker situation," Danbury, Conn., police spokesman Capt. Arthur Sullo told The Associated Press, referring to the female half of the 1930s bank-robbing duo Bonnie and Clyde.
The woman, who police said has told some witnesses she wouldn't be taken alive, is being sought for at least four bank robberies in western Connecticut, and she may be the same person who held up two banks in Westchester County in New York on Wednesday.
"We are working under the assumption that the two bank robberies in New York state were probably the work of the same person, and it appears to be the same person involved in at least one of the Connecticut cases," New York FBI spokesman Joseph Valiquette told the AP.
The thief is described as a white woman, about 5 feet 6 inches tall, slender, with long blond hair. She wears tinted, wire-rim glasses and usually sports a yellow rain slicker and a black cap.
Police haven't ruled out the possibility the robber could have been a man, though, or that the blond hair may have been a wig.
After hitting two banks in New York on Wednesday, the female bank robber had a busy day Thursday, striking four banks in southern Connecticut.
Police said she hit the People's Bank in Newtown around 11:45 a.m.
Then, within the space of about a half hour, three other Connecticut banks, two in Danbury and one in Brookfield, also reported being robbed by a woman fitting her description.
In Danbury, at 2:30 p.m., a First Union Bank branch was robbed; at 2:36 p.m., just a few miles away, the Union Savings Bank in Brookfield, was held up; then it appears that the suspect drove back to Danbury, robbing the Fleet Bank just after 3 p.m.
