Bomb Explodes at Wash. Abortion Clinic
June 11 -- A bomb exploded today at a Tacoma, Wash., medical clinic that provides abortions, fire officials said. No one was reported injured.
The Tacoma Fire Department said the explosive went off at the Westgate Family Medicine Clinic shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time.
It was not immediately known whether the explosion happened in or outside the building, but the blast went off at the back door of the two-level clinic, fire officials said.
It caused minor damage to an overhanging roof, and cars parked in front of the clinic had debris on their hoods.
Police, fire crews and FBI agents were at the scene investigating the incident. Tacoma Deputy Fire Chief Gary Schiesz told The Associated Press a motive for the explosion has not been determined.
The local chapter of the North American Abortions Rights League told ABC affiliate KOMO-TV that the Westgate Family Medicine Clinic received a letter postmarked in Nashville, Tenn., that used religious language and made reference to the fact that the clinic performed abortions.
