Woman Teacher Accused of Sex With Pupil
P H I L A D E L P H I A, March 21 -- A 24-year-old female teacher intern at a Philadelphia elementary school has been arrested and is accused of performing a sex act on a 13-year-old male pupil while his 14-year-old friend watched.
Police said Shannon Jones, who lives in the city's Germantownsection and taught at Levering Elementary in the Roxboroughneighborhood, performed the act on the seventh grader after schoolhours on Feb. 15.
It happened in her car parked in a desertedparking lot in Manayunk, not far from the school, according topolice.
The 14-year-old boy reported the incident to a school securityofficial seven days later, authorities said. School officials saidthey took swift action.
"We immediately removed the intern teacher from the school,started our investigation, and notified the police," said AlexisMoore, a spokeswoman for the School District of Philadelphia.
Teacher Transferred While Investigation Proceeds
Jones, who had no criminal record, was transferred tonon-teaching duties in another school while the investigation wasin progress.
An interview with Jones on Feb. 27 solidified the case againsther, investigators said; she was arrested Tuesday afternoon.
Jones was charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse,statutory sexual assault, and related charges. She was awaitingarraignment Tuesday night and could not be reached for comment.
