How Are You Helping Your Community and Country?
In his January 1961 inaugural address, President Kennedy challenged Americans to serve their country at a time when the Cold War simmered overseas and the civil rights struggle grew in the U.S.
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country," said Kennedy in a riveting speech. "My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."
It was an uplifting call to service that many historians remember as one of the best in the nation's history. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's inauguration, ABC News is launching a special webpage highlighting extraordinary acts of public service. This page, along with one on Facebook, will feature video clips from Kennedy's most inspiring speeches.
And in an ABC News exclusive, Diane Sawyer will anchor a two-hour "20/20" special this month in which America will hear former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy's conversations for the first time, put in context by historians and by the woman who knew her best: her daughter, Caroline.
We are asking you to share with us what you plan to do or are doing to help your community and your country. From opening your home to neighbors still without power from Hurricane Irene to taking our "Made in America" challenge, no act is too small. Please tell us what Kennedy's call to service means to you.
