Eminem Files for Divorce
Aug. 17, 2000 -- Eminem and his wife are splitting for good. Now there’s a shocker.
A spokesperson at Eminem’s label, Interscope Records, confirmed that the chart-topping rap star filed for divorce from his wife, Kimberly Mathers, in Detroit Wednesday morning. The two have been separated since early June.
The couple’s volatile relationship has been the source of much fodder, for both Eminem’s songs — including “Kim”and “’97 Bonnie & Clyde,” both of which featured lyrical fantasies in which he murders his wife — and the press.
Eminem is currently facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon, stemming from an incident on June 4 in which the rapper got into an altercation outside a nightclub after witnessing a man kissing his wife. Shortly after that incident, Kim addressed the media attention surrounding their private life in a letter sent to the Detroit Free Press, noting that “just because my husband is an entertainer, that does not mean that our personal business is for everyone’s entertainment purposes …”
On July 7, the trash-talking rapper’s wife attempted suicide in the couple’s Sterling Heights, Mich., home, reportedly slashing her wrists.
Although Eminem and Kim had been a couple for years, they only married in 1999. Their daughter, Hailie Jade Scott (pictured on the cover of Eminem’s debut, The Slim Shady LP), was born in 1996.
