Olivia Rodrigo unravels in new music video for 'The Cure'
Rodrigo released the new single on Friday.
Now we know why Olivia Rodrigo's upcoming concert trek is called "The Unraveled Tour."
The singer released the music video for her song "The Cure" on Friday, in which she repeats the lyrics "I'm unraveled" as pieces of red yarn -- representing blood -- stream out of her body.
Watch the music video here.
The video begins with Rodrigo, dressed as nurse in a hospital made out of cardboard and string, selecting a heart from a medicine cabinet and injecting it with various potions while singing about how her hope that her partner's love could cure her insecurities has ultimately failed.
"I thought I found the antidote with you," she sings. "But my head is full of poison / and my heart is full of doubt / I got toxins in my bloodstream / You tried hard to suck 'em out / And it feels like medication / and it's good for me, I'm sure / But it don't matter how your love feels anymore / It'll never be the cure."
Rodrigo is then seen walking through the halls of the hospital with a clipboard, sewing tally marks onto a chart with red yarn before poking her finger with the needle by accident.
Red strings of yarn then begin streaming out of her body as she stumbles down the hallway. She ends up on a gurney and is wheeled into an operating room, where nurses begin tying hearts to each string.
As she lies on the operating table, we discover that the hospital -- in addition to being made of cardboard and string -- is actually a diorama.
The "real" Rodrigo then picks up the diorama and places it on the floor of a room filled with cardboard boxes, stepping on it and crushing it before walking out of the room.
In the caption of an Instagram post Friday featuring photos from the music video set, Rodrigo wrote, "This song means so much to me and I'm so so so happy that it's out in the world!"
She added, "This song is the thesis statement of [my new album 'You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love'] and it made the whole album click for me. I hope you enjoy it xoxoxox."
"The Cure" is the second song released from "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," which will be released June 12. Rodrigo previously released "Drop Dead," the album's first single, on April 17.
