Last-minute tips to save on Fourth of July travel, from gas to airport parking
Find out how to save on fuel costs or even get a little money back on airfare.
Americans are expected to hit the road and take to the skies in record numbers for the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.
For those seeking last-minute deals or hoping to keep to a strict budget, ABC News chief transportation correspondent Gio Benitez shared a few tips that could come in handy for anyone looking to save or stretch their dollar.
Those taking to the skies during the holiday stretch could still find savings on airfare, even if their flight has already been booked.
Travelers can check to see if the original price of the flight has gone down, for example, and if it has, they can call the airline, let them know the price dropped and ask for a credit for the fare difference.
While this may work on most major airlines, it does not apply to tickets purchased within the basic economy fare class.
While gas prices are slowly trending down, Amazon Prime members can get a little extra off their next fill-up at the gas station. Members can save 50 cents per gallon at BP, Amoco, and participating ampm and Thorntons gas stations between July 2 and July 5, Amazon said in a press release Tuesday.
To help ensure you are getting the cheapest gas in your area, travelers can track and compare local prices using the GasBuddy app or website to find the best deal before you leave,or while you're en-route.
For those headed to the airport, there could also be big savings available on parking.
Look at options for book ahead pricing or consider parking at a nearby airport hotel and using the complimentary shuttle. Some airport hotels offer parking for as little as $4 per day, but be sure to check with the hotel first for permission.
Travelers can also do a quick search for any coupon codes to get airport parking for even less.
Finally, while not a money-saving tip, be sure to download and use an airline app, as it could help save on any major hassles if a quick change comes up, like rebooking.
