Kenny Chesney Performs on 'Good Morning America'

Feb. 16, 2005 — -- Kenny Chesney is country music's biggest star -- and, some of his fans might say, the sexiest singer in a cowboy hat.

His new album "Be As You Are: Songs from an Old Blue Chair," which includes laid-back tropical tones, debuted atop the Billboard charts last week.

As part of the "Good Morning America Gets Hot" concert series, Chesney performed two songs live in "Good Morning America's" Times Square studios -- the title track from his prior album, "When the Sun Goes Down," and "Old Blue Chair," a song from "Be As You Are."

Both albums currently are in the Top 10 of the Billboard country albums chart.

Chesney, 36, has sold more than 20 million albums over a decadelong recording career. He recently was voted the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards.

'Moments in My Life'

The singer's vacation retreats to the Caribbean are said to have inspired the island flavor of his new album. And he told ABC News' Diane Sawyer that he really did write "quite a few" of the album's songs while sitting and reflecting in an old blue chair.

He has described "Be As You Are's" songs as "Polaroids of different moments in my life," written to preserve his memories.

"I think everybody, when they become an adult, they go through a growing-up period," he said. "That's what this album is. A lot of these songs are very personal and close to me."

Hugs for Fans

Chesney also draws many female fans. So "Good Morning America" sent along cameras to capture the last-minute preparations of six who got up before dawn, strategizing and plotting to meet their idol after discovering he'd be performing on "GMA."

And meet him they did. After Sawyer explained to the singer during his performance how they had waited, Chesney brought the women up on stage and gave each one a hug.
