Dennehy's Parents Believe Son Is Alive

July 22, 2003 -- The ex-roommate of missing Baylor basketball player Patrick Dennehy was arrested and charged with his murder, but Dennehy's mother believes her son is alive.

Police say Carlton Dotson Jr. was arrested Monday in Chestertown, Md. The arrest was based on a warrant issued by police in Waco, Texas, where both men attended Baylor University.

Meanwhile, Dennehy's mother, Valorie Brabazon, says she still feels her "son is out there somewhere alive," she said on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America.

"Carlton, if you know where our son is, please let us know," Dennehy's mother said.

Brabazon's husband, Brian Brabazon, says he and his wife will hold out hope until they have a reason not to anymore. "Until we see otherwise, with our own two eyes, Patrick is still alive," he said.

Brian Brabazon also told Good Morning America that he is eager to hear more from Carlton Dotson.

"We don't know where Carlton's head is at," Brabazon said. "He's been having problems the last couple of weeks. And this could just be hopefully another media stunt by him," he said.

Chestertown Police Chief Walter Coryell said officers responded to Dotson's location after the 21-year-old called seeking counseling. The young man complained that he was hearing voices, police said.

"Our officers took him to our local hospital, where he was receiving that help," Coryell said. While there, Mr. Dotson determined on his own to contact the FBI, and in fact did do so," he said.

Coryell said Dotson was questioned for at least two hours by three FBI agents from the Annapolis field office.

After the questioning, Waco police called for Dotson's arrest and issued the warrant. Police in Chestertown, which is about 55 miles from Dotson's hometown of Hurlock, Md., served the warrant issued Monday.

Dotson was ordered held without bail at a hearing this morning and an extradition hearing will be held within 30 days.

Meanwhile, police in Waco say they are narrowing their search for the still undiscovered body of Dennehy.

Dennehy's vehicle was found June 25, in a strip mall parking lot in Virginia Beach, Va.

Dennehy's friends have said the basketball player told them that he and Dotson were being threatened and felt they were in danger.
