Investigators searching for suspect after package bomb in Monaco injures 3
A Ukrainian businessman was among the wounded, officials said.
Officials in Monaco are pleading for help from the public after a man allegedly dropped a package bomb in a building lobby, which went off and wounded three people Monday.
The blast took place around 9 p.m. local time in the apartment building, and was felt as far away as Nice, France, 13 miles away, according to Stéphane Thibault, Monaco’s prosecutor.
Investigators said that an unidentified Ukrainian businessman, his partner and teenage son were seriously injured in the blast.
Thibault in a news conference Tuesday said that authorities believe the incident was not related to terror. He told reporters that the unidentified suspect "appeared to have left for France."
The prosecutor told reporters that the suspect was filmed on surveillance cameras and allegedly arrived at the building and left the package at the entrance for a short amount of time before the victims appeared at the main door.
The package exploded when the victims arrived, according to Thibault.
Thibault also said that law enforcement in Monaco is in touch with colleagues in France and added that he is hopeful the suspect can be caught "quite quickly."
Monaco Minister of State Christophe Mirmand told news station Monaco INFO Tuesday that security has been beefed up in the principality, which is roughly 0.8 square miles in area.
"I am calling on everyone to help identify the person believed to be responsible for these acts," he told the station.
