US hiker dies after lightning strike on Mount Etna, Italian media reports

Officials have not released the name of the 30-year-old hiker, ANSA reported.

An American hiking on Mount Etna in Italy was struck by lightning on Sunday and later died in a hospital, Italian media reported.

The 30-year-old, whose name has not been publicly released, reportedly was climbing in a restricted area on the volcano when a thunderstorm began, according to ANSA, the country's national news agency.

The hiker was reportedly in "serious" condition when rescue crews arrived at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, ANSA reported. The hiker later died at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania, the report said.
