Noem says Secret Service is investigating Comey's online 'threat' against Trump

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the U.S. Secret Service is looking into a post from former FBI Director James Comey, in which she and others in the White House say is a threat to President Donald Trump

"Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey just called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump," she posted on X on Thursday. "DHS and Secret Service is investigating this threat and will respond appropriately."

FBI Director Kash Patel also said in a post on X that his agency is aware of the post from Comey and is providing support to the FBI.

In a since-deleted Instagram post, Comey had a picture showing "8647" written in seashells on the beach, with the caption, "Cool shell formation on my beach walk."

Some far-right allies of Trump, including Laura Loomer, have alleged that Comey is calling for violence against the president.

To "86" something has fairly broad interpretations as a slang term -- and can simply mean to nix or "get rid of" something.

Comey said he figured the message was political, but didn't realize it called for violence against Trump.

"It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind," Comey said in a follow-up post to Instagram.

Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement to ABC News that the agency "vigorously investigates anything that can be taken as a potential threat against our protectees" and is aware of the post made by Comey.

Rubio echoes Trump's push to get meeting with Putin, gives mixed messages on negotiations

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with reporters Thursday and set the bar low for talks between Russia and Ukraine.

"At this point, I think it's abundantly clear that the only way we're going to have a breakthrough here is between President Trump and President Putin," he said.

Rubio did not give specifics about when such a meeting would take place.

He again sent mixed messages about how committed the Trump administration was to pressing on with the negotiations.

Rubio also announced that he would meet again Friday with the Ukrainian foreign minister and the delegation that travelled to the country for talks with Russia, while a lower-level U.S. official would meet with the Russian delegation.
