White House officials and Republican lawmakers gathered at the Kennedy Center at 6 p.m. to hold a prayer vigil in remembrance of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
On Saturday, after long promising to impose consequences on Russia in an effort to get President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table to end the war in Ukraine, President Donald Trump pressed NATO nations to join him before he imposes potential sanctions.
Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday that there is an appetite in Congress to impose sanctions on Russia, which he said are "overdue."

President Trump, on "Fox & Friends," said his patience with Russian President Vladimir Putin is "sort of running out and running out fast." He said the administration is "going to have to come down very, very strong" on Russia.
When asked what he was going to do, Trump said "more sanctions" could be in store for Russia and weighed in on Russian drones entering Polish airspace. He said Putin "shouldn't be close to Poland anyways.
Trump after Kirk's killing: 'You want revenge at the voter box'
"Fox & Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade asked President Trump on Friday, "So is the message to the right, the people that are gonna go 'I want revenge' to not have revenge? Charlie Kirk would not want revenge?"
"You want revenge at the voter box," Trump said, before going on to rail against mail-in voting across the country.

Trump said it will include National Guard and "the military, if we need it."
Trump says 'with high degree of certainty' Kirk person of interest in custody
President Donald Trump on "Fox & Friends" gave an update on the person of interest in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
"I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody," Trump said.
He later added, "Subject to change, but the facts are the facts we have the person that we think is the person we're looking for."
