The incident took place at the 7th Avenue-53rd Street station, police said.
Police responded to a Midtown Manhattan subway station Saturday following reports of shots fired, the NYPD said.
The NYPD and FDNY said that there was at least one victim, a unidentified man, at the 7th Avenue-53rd Street station, who was critically injured.
"Expect road closures, traffic delays, mass transit disruptions & emergency personnel near 7th Avenue & West 53rd Street, Manhattan. Avoid the area," New York City's Office of Emergency Management said in a statement.
There were no immediate details about the suspect.
"I am deeply disturbed about the tragic shooting at the 7th & 53rd subway station," District 3 Councilman Carl Wilson, who represents the area, told ABC News in a statement.
"My office is in touch with the NYPD -- the victim was taken to the hospital and the investigation is ongoing. I, along with thousands of New Yorkers, use this station every day. No one should have to worry about their safety from gun violence while just trying to get around our city," he added.
