Man charged with harassment in Philadelphia cheesesteak assault, police say
A viral video at Pat's King of Steaks prompted the assault investigation.
PHILADELPHIA -- A content creator was charged Friday after an employee at the famous Pat's King of Steaks was assaulted, according to Philadelphia police.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, turned himself in to police on Thursday after police said they were reviewing video of what appears to show the confrontation at the cheesesteak shop.
Now, officials say he has been charged with harassment.
In the video, a person can be seen throwing a cheesesteak at an employee.
The creator said he reviews restaurants and throws the food at employees if he doesn't like it.
Pat's King of Steaks now says they plan to implement a ban on cameras at the restaurant following the incident.
Rita Marie Oliveri, owner of Pat's King of Steaks, said the restaurant, which has been operating for nearly 97 years, has received an outpouring of support from customers and community members.
Visitors to the restaurant also reacted to the video.
"It's horrible. Maybe wanted to get clicks, you know," said Bob Baylinson of Fort Lauderdale.
The incident has also drawn support from Pat's longtime rival, Geno's Steaks. Despite the well-known competition between the two cheesesteak businesses, representatives from Geno's expressed solidarity with the employee involved.
"In solidarity as people who get up and go to work every morning. I feel that, I wouldn't want it to happen to me. That's somebody's grandfather. They don't deserve that," said Anthony Rossi of Geno's.
The investigation remains ongoing.
