'Multiple' people injured in shooting near University of Iowa, campus and police say

"First responders on scene. Confirmed victims," the university said in an alert.

Police were investigating a shooting in which "multiple victims" were injured near the University of Iowa early on Sunday, the campus and law enforcement said.

"At this time, multiple victims have been taken to area hospitals to be treated for wounds suffered in the shooting," the Iowa City Police Department said in a statement. "No information on their conditions is available at this time."

Police said in a statement that officers responded to a report of a "large fight" on the 100 block of East College Street at 1:46 a.m., adding that, "Arriving officers heard gunfire." Gunshots were reported near College and Clinton streets in Iowa City, the campus said in an alert.

"First responders on scene. Confirmed victims," the university said in an update posted at 2:03 a.m. "Please continue to avoid the area."

No arrests have been made, police said.
