Search suspended for child missing in Lake Michigan due to 'hazardous conditions'
Dive operations were called off due to a risk to responder safety.
The search for a child who was seen entering the water at Washington Park Beach in Indiana has been called off due to "hazardous conditions" following a multi-agency search effort, officials said.
The LaPorte County Dispatch Center received a report at approximately 5:43 p.m. on Monday afternoon informing them that a child had been observed "entering the water at Washington Park Beach on the east side of the catwalk, just south of the lighthouse" and that "bystanders reported the child, who was wearing red shorts, disappeared beneath the surface," according to a statement from the Michigan City Fire Department (MCFD).
An immediate response from local officials was initiated involving the Michigan City Fire Department, Michigan City Police Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and La Porte County Emergency Medical Service, authorities said.
Search efforts on Lake Michigan included four MCFD divers, one DNR diver, a fishing charter boat and the use of drone technology to assist in locating the child, according to the MCFD.
"Despite the immediate response of multiple agencies and specialized dive teams, the challenging water conditions significantly complicated search efforts," the MCFD said in their statement. "After an extensive search, dive operations were suspended due to hazardous conditions that posed a risk to responder safety."
Three MCFD divers sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for evaluation, officials said. A DNR diver was also injured and was evaluated by EMS at the scene.
"Strong currents, changing wave action, and limited visibility beneath the water can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers and rescuers," MCFD said. "We urge everyone to pay close attention to beach conditions, heed all posted warnings, and stay out of the water when hazardous conditions are present."
The incident remains ongoing and officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
