Suspect in shooting of Jets player Kris Boyd jailed without bail following court appearance

Boyd was shot Nov. 16 outside a Midtown Manhattan restaurant.

A suspect in the Nov. 16 shooting of New York Jets player Kris Boyd was ordered to be held without bail during an arraignment early Wednesday on an attempted murder charge.

The suspect, 20-year-old Fredrick Green, surrendered to police on Monday in the Buffalo area, after officers surrounded a house where he had been staying, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Besides attempted murder, Green has been charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the Boyd shooting.

Green did not enter a plea during his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court just after midnight on Wednesday.

A defense attorney had asked that Green be put on home detention and bail, but a judge rejected the request after prosecutors argued he was a flight risk.

Prosecutors claimed that following the shooting, Green attempted to alter his appearance by cutting off most of his hair. He also changed his phone and deactivated his social media accounts, prosecutors said.

Detectives recovered video of the shooting that occurred outside the Sei Less restaurant on West 38th Street in Midtown Manhattan and captured an altercation between Green and Boyd, according to a criminal complaint.

The altercation ended when Green "briefly took a shooter's stance by extending his arm outward" and fired two shots, according to the criminal complaint. The muzzle flash from one of the shots is visible on video, the complaint said.

Detectives identified Green as the suspect through witness tips, cellphone data and surveillance images, according to the complaint.

Acting on a tip that Green was staying with a friend in the Buffalo suburb of Amherst, detectives zeroed in on the suspect's whereabouts by tracking a gray Mercedes-Benz registered to Green's girlfriend, according to the complaint.

On Monday morning, a U.S. Marshals task force surrounded the second-floor apartment in Amherst.  After briefly considering jumping out a window to allegedly avoid being apprehended, Green surrendered, according to the complaint.

The U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force -- comprised of federal, state and local law enforcement members -- said in a statement on Monday that it worked with New York police detectives "to locate and arrest the suspect, who fled the scene following the shooting."

The 29-year-old Boyd underwent multiple treatments at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for the bullet that entered his abdomen and lodged in his lung, authorities said.

The shooting appeared to have stemmed from an exchange of words between Boyd, who was with two other Jets players and a friend, and another group "chirping" about their clothes, police sources told ABC News.

On Nov. 19, three days after the shooting, Boyd posted a photo of himself to his Instagram account, saying he was beginning to breathe on his own.

"I'm coming along, starting to breathe on my own now," Boyd wrote. "Sincerely appreciate everyone!"

Boyd was released from the hospital a few days after being shot, but was forced to briefly return to the hospital due to "health issues," he wrote in an Instagram post.

Earlier in the investigation, police released two images of a person of interest in the case, but it was not clear on Tuesday whether it was the same person who was arrested in Buffalo.

Boyd, a defensive cornerback and special teams player, paid a visit to the Jets' team facility on Dec. 3, surprising his teammates, ESPN reported.
