Two students on a Tennessee university cycling team were killed in a crash involving a vehicle, school officials said.
The crash "involving a car and a group of bicyclists" occurred Wednesday morning on a highway in Carter County, in the northeastern part of the state, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The cycling team was from Milligan University, a private Christian institution in Elizabethton, school officials said.
Multiple medical helicopters responded and were transporting people to area hospitals, Tennessee Highway Patrol said. It did not detail how many were hurt or the extent of their injuries.
Two people died, Tennessee Highway Patrol said, citing preliminary information. The university identified them as Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, both sophomores.
"We are profoundly shocked and saddened to share that members of our cycling team were in an accident involving a vehicle this morning while cycling in Hampton, TN," the university said in a statement. "There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss. Our prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy."
Multiple cyclists were also seriously injured and were being treated at Johnson City Medical Center, the university said.
At least one person was transported by air to Johnson City Medical Center, according to the hospital operator, Ballad Health.
