Theater professor shot and killed at home in Georgia: Authorities

Erica Anderson was a lecturer at Columbus State University, the school said.

A theater professor was fatally shot at a residence in Georgia this week, authorities said.

Erica Anderson, 41, was shot and killed early Monday in Columbus, a spokesperson for the Columbus Police Department confirmed to ABC News.

The shooting remains under investigation and police will not be releasing any further details at this time, the spokesperson said Tuesday.

Anderson was a professor at Columbus State University, which said it is "deeply saddened" over her death.

She joined the school's Department of Theatre & Dance this fall as a lecturer in costume and was its costume shop supervisor.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends, as well as the students she impacted," Columbus State University President Stuart Rayfield said in a statement. "While we mourn her passing, our team is also ensuring her students and colleagues are aware of all the university support resources available to them."

Prior to joining Columbus State, Anderson taught costumes at Southern Utah University and the University of Florida and had worked in theaters and opera houses across the country, including the Sarasota Opera and Indiana Repertory Theatre, according to the university.

Anderson was "passionate about her work and her students," a GoFundMe page in support of her family stated.

She is survived by her three children and husband, who are based in Indianapolis, according to the GoFundMe page, which said her husband "is currently undergoing cancer treatments, which makes this loss even more devastating for their family."
