Steven Beynon

Biography
Steve Beynon is a reporter for ABC News covering the Pentagon and national security, based in the Washington D.C. area. He has an extensive background covering military personnel and veterans’ issues. A veteran of the war in Afghanistan, he spent more than a decade in the Army as a cavalry scout, which deeply informs his reporting. Before joining ABC News, he reported for Military.com, Politico and Stars and Stripes. In his hometown of Cincinnati, he wrote for Fox 19 and The Cincinnati Enquirer. His reporting has earned national recognition. Military Veterans in Journalism named him among the top veterans in journalism for an investigation that detailed a church financing itself by fraudulently siphoning millions-of-dollars' worth of veterans’ benefits in one of the largest known scams to target the military community. Steve also received the James Crawley Award from Military Reporters & Editors for his coverage of the military’s recruiting challenges, their connection to broader public health and education trends, and the Pentagon’s efforts to reshape how it recruits young Americans. He was also part of a reporting team whose investigation into how extremist groups recruit service members and veterans — and the implications for national security — earned the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on National Defense.
