Crowds gather in Milan to honor Giorgio Armani as designer lies in state

Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their respects to the late designer.

Milan is paying tribute to Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer who died Thursday at the age of 91.

On Saturday, thousands of mourners queued outside the Armani/Teatro to view Armani’s closed coffin, which will remain on public display through Sunday.

The Armani/Teatro, at the company's headquarters on Via Bergognone, drew crowds of both local residents and well-known figures from the fashion world and beyond.

Designer Donatella Versace, carrying white flowers, was seen paying her respects before exiting. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala also attended.

The Armani Group confirmed his death in a statement posted to Instagram on Thursday, describing him as "the inventor, founder and tireless engine" of the brand.

The company noted that Armani had worked until his final days, remaining closely involved in new collections and projects.

The public viewing will continue from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday. In accordance with his wishes, Armani's funeral will be held privately.
