Deputies responded Tuesday to a reported domestic violence shooting at a residence after a woman said she had been shot and needed medical attention, according to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office.

The woman, who had fled the residence to a neighbor's house, reported her brother had shot her and she said there were others in the house that she felt were "threatened," Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said at a press conference Tuesday.

The woman was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Nowels.

Arriving deputies learned that the suspect had an active felony warrant for his arrest, that he may have access to additional weapons and there were possibly other victims, the sheriff's office said.

At the scene, deputies used a drone to locate a person who was down in the yard. That person was later determined to be dead, according to Nowels.

The Spokane County SWAT Team and deputies approached the house out of concern for at least one other victim believed to be in the house with the suspect. When they attempted to breach the door, shots were fired from inside the home and two deputies were critically injured, according to Nowels and the sheriff's office.

Deputies returned fire and worked to move the severely injured deputies to a position of cover and provide medical aid, according to the sheriff's office.

Both deputies sustained "life-threatening injuries," Nowels said, with immediate life-saving medical aid requested, including helicopters and portions of I-90 and US-195 closed off for emergency transport, according to the sheriff's office.

One of the deputies died from his injuries Tuesday night, the sheriff's office said. The other deputy remains on life support in critical condition though "unfortunately, he is not expected to survive," the sheriff's office said Wednesday.

"As an organ donor, arrangements are being considered and he will continue to serve others with the gift of life," the sheriff's office said.

The suspect and one other person who was inside the house appeared to be dead, in addition to the person found in the yard, according to Nowels.

The incident remains under investigation.
