3 dead, others injured after vehicle strikes cars and pedestrians in Oakland, California, officials say

The juvenile driver of the vehicle was arrested, Oakland police said.

Three people were killed on Saturday as a vehicle struck pedestrians in Oakland, California, according to fire officials, who said the driver and several other people were injured.

The vehicle struck both cars and pedestrians at about 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of International Boulevard and 85th Avenue, the Oakland Fire Department said on social media early Sunday morning.

Three of the injured people were transported to local hospitals, where two were in critical condition, the department said, adding that the driver and another injured person were awaiting medical transport near the scene of the crash.

In an update later Sunday, the Oakland Police Department said three pedestrians died at the scene and three others were transported to area hospitals, where their conditions were listed ranging from critical to stable. The names of the victims were not publicly released.

"The driver of the vehicle was also transported to an area hospital for further medical treatment," the Oakland Police statement said.

"During the investigation, it appeared that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on 85th Avenue and made a westbound turn onto International Boulevard, striking a parked vehicle and several pedestrians in the area," the Oakland Police statement said.

"The driver of the vehicle, a juvenile, was arrested in connection with the incident," according to the Oakland Police statement, which added that it was "unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this collision."     

"Oakland is mourning the lives lost in last night’s tragic crash at International Boulevard and 85th Avenue in East Oakland. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, loved ones, and all of those impacted," Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said in a statement Sunday.

"Thank you to the Oakland Police Department, Oakland Fire Department, and our first responders," Lee's statement also said.
