University of Maryland police seek community's help in search for missing student Dilan Ashar

Ashar was last seen in College Park at around 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 2, police said.

The mother of missing University of Maryland student Dilan Shaan Ashar issued an emotional plea to the community for help as campus police search for her 22-year-old son.

"Dilan is a kind, thoughtful young man who cares deeply about people. He loves sports and he loves to cook," Binita Ashar, who was joined by his father and brother, said in the recorded message, which was released on the UMD police's YouTube page on Tuesday.

"He doesn't have his phone, his wallet, or any identification. This is why we need people to call if you have information," she added.

UMD police said in a statement that his case is classified as a "critical missing person."

"We need your help in continuing to look for Dilan," the statement said. "Every bit of information can help."

Ashar's mother said that her son was last seen on Friday, Oct. 2, at about 2:30 am local time at the Terrapin Trail Garage near the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland. He is 6 feet 2 inches tall with dark hair, and was wearing a black University of Maryland sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and white shoes when last seen.

"If you live or work near College Park, please check your doorbell, car, and business cameras from early Friday morning and onward," Binita Ashar said.

Police released two photos of Ashar, including one that was captured through surveillance footage of him leaving his residence at approximately 2 a.m. on the day he was last seen.

"All searches thus far, unfortunately, have yielded no results. We will continue to re-check these areas and more," police said in a statement on Tuesday.

Several searches covering approximately 110 acres have been conducted around Terrapin Trail Garage, using drones, cadaver dogs and dozens of first responders, according to police. The searches covered surrounding areas like the university golf course, parking garages, wood lines, Lake Artemesia and nearby parks, officials said.

UMD police didn't immediately respond to ABC News' request for updates on Wednesday.

"Dilan, we love you so much, and we hope you are safe. We want you home," Binita Ashar said. "We are waiting for you."

Police are urging anyone with information about Ashar's whereabouts to contact UMD police at 301-405-3555.
