At 21, while working for designer Jean Louis, Bob Mackie sketched a dress for Marilyn Monroe, which became the infamous “Happy Birthday” dress she wore while serenading President Kennedy. Over the course of his six-decade career, Mackie designed for such stars as Carol Burnett, Cher, Elton John, Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. He won a Tony Award for “The Cher Show” in 2019, the same year he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. A 32-time Emmy nominee and nine-time winner, Mackie was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2002.
