Robert Mueller worked in the U.S. Attorney’s office, the Department of Justice, and, from 1998 to 2001,
served as the U.S. Attorney for San Francisco. He became the director of the FBI on Sept. 4, 2001, after
being nominated by President George W. Bush. Mueller served as director of the FBI for 12 years, from
Sept. 4, 2001, to Sept. 4, 2013. In 2017, Mueller was appointed as special counsel to investigate Russian
interference into the 2016 U.S. presidential election. He worked on what came to be known as the Mueller
Report. On May 29, 2019, Mueller resigned from the Department of Justice.
